What Claude Code is and how it works Free
Claude Code is a terminal application where you describe what you want in plain language and an AI agent writes, changes and debugs the code for you. This lesson explains what that means and why you don't need to be an expert to start.

Getting a plan and installing Claude Code Beyond Pass
You will learn what you need before you start (a paid Claude plan or API credits) and how to install Claude Code with one command in your terminal. You will also check that it runs, log in, and trust a folder.

The Claude desktop app: a visual alternative to the terminal Beyond Pass
This segment shows that Anthropic offers a desktop app with a visual coding mode, which is simpler than the command-line tool. It also explains when the command-line tool is still the better choice, and the sponsor section about DINQ is covered only as an ad, not as part of the lesson.

Installing Git and connecting GitHub Beyond Pass
You will install Git, a tool that saves checkpoints of your code so you can go back if something breaks, and connect your GitHub account to your terminal. Git runs on your own computer, while GitHub stores a copy of your code online.

Setting up an editor project and your first prompt Beyond Pass
You learn how to open a dedicated project folder in a code editor such as Cursor or VS Code, start Claude Code in that editor's terminal, and give it a first prompt that produces a working tic tac toe game. You also see how to run the generated file in a browser and where the changes appear.

Modes, shortcuts, and planning a project Beyond Pass
You learn Claude Code's three working modes (ask, accept edits, plan) and how to switch between them with Shift+Tab, plus keyboard shortcuts for clearing prompts, reusing old commands, and writing multi-line prompts. You then see why starting in plan mode and describing a project clearly, one small task at a time, gives better results.
5 build steps2 exercises3 questions - 7
Planning a top-down shooter with Claude Code's plan mode Beyond Pass
You learn how to use Claude Code's plan mode to turn a one-paragraph game idea into a written plan, answer its clarifying questions, and run the plan. You also see how to control cost by choosing a model and clearing context.
5 build steps1 exercise3 questions - 8
Git workflow and the CLAUDE.md memory file Beyond Pass
You learn how to have Claude Code set up a GitHub repository and save its work as commits, so you always have a restore point. You also learn how a CLAUDE.md file gives Claude a persistent memory of your project's rules across sessions.
2 code7 build steps2 exercises3 questions - 9
Background tasks, agents, MCP and skills in Claude Code Beyond Pass
You will learn how Claude Code runs long-lived commands in the background and how to view, kill, or interrupt them. You will also learn what agents, MCP servers and skills are, and when each one is useful.

Final project
Ship a Browser Game with Claude Code, Git and a CLAUDE.md
Use Claude Code from start to finish to plan, build and version a small browser game of your own design. You will practise the whole workflow: install and set up, plan mode, prompting, Git and GitHub checkpoints, and persistent rules in CLAUDE.md.
Its 7 tasks open with Beyond Pass.

What Claude Code is and how it works
Claude Code is a terminal application where you describe what you want in plain language and an AI agent writes, changes and debugs the code for you. This lesson explains what that means and why you don't need to be an expert to start.
Draw and write next to the video.
The idea
Claude Code is a command line application, also called a terminal application. The terminal is the text window on your computer where you type commands instead of clicking buttons. Claude Code runs inside that window, so everything happens through typed text.
The video describes it as Anthropic's version of tools like Cursor: a place where you can generate a lot of code using the terminal. You can use it to generate code, debug projects, make websites and create applications, in short whatever you want to build.
The key idea is prompt-based coding. You do not have to write the code yourself. You type to an AI agent, describe the output you want, and the agent starts writing code to produce it. Your job shifts from typing every line to explaining clearly what you need.
Claude Code is often used together with other developer tools, and the video shows a few of them later. But you do not need to be an expert programmer to use it. The presenter says even a complete beginner can create some really cool projects.
A simple way to picture it: you are the person who knows what the finished thing should do, and Claude Code is the agent that does the typing. The rest of the course shows how to set it up and use it well.
Key points
- Claude Code is a command line (terminal) application: you use it by typing, not by clicking. 0:26
- It can generate code, debug projects, make websites and create applications. 0:35
- Prompt-based coding means you describe the result in words and an AI agent writes the code. 0:42
- It is similar in purpose to tools like Cursor, but works from the terminal. 0:35
- You do not need to be an expert to start; beginners can build real projects. 0:56
Practice
In your own words, explain to a friend what Claude Code is and what 'prompt-based coding' means.
Solution
- Say Claude Code is a terminal application where you type.
- Say you describe the result you want in plain words.
- Say an AI agent writes and changes the code for you.
Claude Code is a terminal app. With prompt-based coding you describe what you want in words, and an AI agent writes the code to make it.
Open a list of three small projects you would like to build (for example a website, a game, or a tool that renames files). For each, write one sentence describing the output you want, as if you were prompting an AI agent.
Solution
- Pick three projects you care about.
- Write one clear sentence per project that says what it should do.
- Check each sentence names the result, not the code.
Three sentences, each describing a desired result in plain language, such as 'A web page that shows my favourite recipes with a search box.'
On your scratchpad
Draw a simple diagram: a box labelled 'You' with an arrow to a box labelled 'Claude Code (terminal)', and another arrow to a box labelled 'Finished project'. Write one prompt you would type on the arrow.
