Beyond open beta · last updated 16 October 2026
Beyond turns a YouTube video you are watching into a page you can explore. This page says what that involves, in plain words.
Who runs Beyond
Beyond is run by Hakan Karakaşoğlu (yenidunia), İstanbul, Türkiye. For anything about your data, write to hello@openinbeyond.com.
What the extension reads, and when
Only when you press Open in Beyond under a video, the extension reads in your browser that video's title, channel, the transcript YouTube shows and a few frames, and sends them to Beyond's server. It reads nothing else from your browser, your history or your Google account. When you choose a suggested video under a Beyond page, the extension opens that video in a small YouTube window, reads it the same way, and closes the window.
What Beyond does with it
- A language model (Anthropic's Claude) reads the frames and the transcript, first as a whole and then part by part, to find the video's points, steps, moments, people and places. Only the video's own material is sent, nothing about you. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, this material is not used to train its models.
- Beyond's code builds your page from that reading, with background facts from open sources such as Wikipedia and Wikidata, credited on the page.
- Your page belongs to your extension installation — a random number the extension makes once and keeps, nothing about you — or to your invite code if you have one, and is never indexed by search engines. New pages appear on Beyond's front page, where anyone can open them (see below); a page you keep off the front page only you can open.
- The frames are kept in your own browser. While your page is on the front page the server keeps them too, so others see the page whole; once you keep it off the front page, the server deletes its copy as soon as your browser has them, and in any case within 24 hours.
- The page text (Beyond's reading and short quotes from the transcript) stays on the server so you can come back to it, until you ask us to delete it or the beta ends.
- Beyond's front page shows the newest pages: each with the video's picture, title and channel, and anyone can open the page from there. Nothing about who made a page is shown. You can keep your page off the front page — and to yourself — with one tick in its Share on social media window.
- If you press Share and create a share link, a public page shows your page's card (Beyond's reading and one short quote, never the video's frames) with a link to the video. Stop sharing deletes the card.
Why we may do this: to provide the page you asked for (performance of a service you request). Counting how pages are used (below) rests on our legitimate interest in improving them and holds no personal data.
What is stored on your device
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
Cookie beyond_owner | Lets you open your own pages. Signed, no other content. | 60 days |
| Browser storage: My collection, your pages list, kept frames, your result cards | What you chose to keep, so it is there when you come back. | Until you remove it or clear your browser's site data |
All of this is needed for what you asked Beyond to do, so there is no cookie banner. Beyond uses no advertising or analytics cookies.
If you sign in with Google
Signing in is optional; making and opening pages never needs it. If you sign in, Beyond receives from Google your name, email address and profile photo address, and keeps them with an account identifier derived from your Google account (Google's own identifier is not stored). The account also keeps which of your extension installs made pages (so you can open them on other devices, such as your phone) and a copy of your collection (what you kept and the pages you saved). Beyond reads nothing else from your Google account — no email, contacts or files. You can sign out at any time, and Delete my account in the account menu removes the account and its copy of your collection at once.
What Beyond counts
Per page: that it was opened (and whether from a share link), which part you first used, that you kept something (its kind only), and what you did with a share card. Each count holds the hour, the page and that label — no name, address, IP address, device or browser identifier, no cookie and nothing you typed. If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, nothing is counted.
Other services a page may contact
- YouTube: the video player loads only when you press play or rest the pointer on a suggested video (a muted preview), from youtube-nocookie.com. From then on YouTube's privacy policy applies.
- Images from open collections and stores (Wikimedia Commons, Apple, Steam) are loaded from their servers, which therefore see your IP address, as with any picture on the web.
- Store buttons such as Find it on Amazon open a store search in your country's store when you press them. Beyond picks the store from your browser's language and does not keep it. During the beta these links carry no affiliate code; if they do later, the page says so next to them.
- Watch next suggestions come from YouTube API Services: Beyond's server sends YouTube only search words taken from the page's subject — nothing about you — and keeps the results for a day. Their thumbnails load from YouTube's servers. Google's Privacy Policy applies to YouTube: policies.google.com/privacy.
- Fonts are served by Beyond itself; no request goes to Google Fonts.
Where it is kept
Pages and Beyond's records are kept on Beyond's server (DigitalOcean, Germany (Frankfurt)). The server keeps no access log of visitors' IP addresses. To share the daily number of pages fairly, it counts page requests per network for the current day using a salted hash of the address, held only in memory and forgotten at the end of the day.
Your rights
You can ask what Beyond holds about you, have it corrected or deleted, or object to its use: write to hello@openinbeyond.com and we answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your data protection authority (in Türkiye the KVKK Board, in the EU the authority of your country).
Children
Beyond is not meant for children under 16.
Videos and their creators
Pages link to the original video and play it through YouTube's own player; quotes are short and attributed. If you made a video and want its page removed, see Content removal.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that matters, the date above changes.
