Beyond, the Chrome extension that turns YouTube videos into pages and lessons
Something not working? Write to hello@openinbeyond.com with the video's link, what you pressed and what you saw (a screenshot helps). We answer within two working days.
Getting started
- Add Open in Beyond to Chrome on a computer. It is free.
- Open a YouTube video, or refresh one that was already open.
- Press Open in Beyond under the video. A page made from it opens in a new tab, usually in about a minute.
- For a long tutorial or lecture, open it on Lessons and press Make the lessons: a large YouTube window opens and reads the video, which takes a few minutes. Keep it open until the lessons appear.
You can also try a finished course first, without installing anything: every course and the library open in any browser, on a phone too.
When a page does not open
- I don't see the Open in Beyond button.
- Refresh the YouTube tab once after installing. The button sits under the video. On a phone, YouTube Shorts or the YouTube app it does not appear: the extension works in Chrome on a computer.
- It keeps waiting, or says it could not read the video.
- Beyond reads the transcript YouTube shows for the video. If an ad is playing, wait until the video itself starts and press again. Being signed in to YouTube helps; a video without a transcript, or one that is private, age-restricted or a live stream, may not work.
- It says today's new pages are made.
- Making a page costs Beyond real work, so each install can make a few new pages a day, and the whole site has a daily limit. Pages already made always open. Come back tomorrow, or open an existing course.
- The video plays sound but no picture, or a lesson looks broken.
- Refresh the page. If it happens again, write to us with the page's address.
Questions
- Is Beyond free?
- The extension is free. Every lesson is open for free for now, during the beta. If that changes, the site will say so first.
- Does the practice terminal run commands on my computer?
- No. It is a simulation built for the commands in that lesson. The Python and JavaScript playgrounds are separate: they run supported code inside your browser, not on your computer's system.
- Do I need an account?
- No. Making and opening pages never needs one. Signing in with Google keeps your XP, collection and lesson progress on every device; Delete my account in the account menu removes it at once.
- What is sent when I press Open in Beyond?
- That video's title, channel, transcript and a few frames go to Beyond's server, and Anthropic's Claude reads them to make the page. When you ask a lesson's tutor for help, what you typed and the lesson's text go to Claude too. Nothing else is read from your browser. The full account is in the privacy notice.
- Is Beyond made with the video's creator?
- No, unless a page says so. The video always plays in YouTube's own player and its channel is credited. Creators can have pages of their videos removed: see content removal.
- How do I remove the extension?
- Open chrome://extensions, find Open in Beyond and press Remove. Your pages list and collection kept in the browser go with it unless you signed in.
